Chop Till You Drop

You use it everyday in the Kitchen. If not looked after it can make you sick – And yet you probably never give it a second thought. The Chopping Board is a large board you use in the kitchen for chopping, cutting and preparing food on. When purchasing a new board, there are heaps of options to choose from – timber, glass, marble, plastic. And it can be a confusing choice. Glass and Marble type cutting boards may look good but they play havoc on your knives. The hard surface will quickly blunt your knife and damage it’s edge. So, keep your glass and marble boards for serving food only. When it comes to wooden and plastic boards, even the experts are divided as to which is best. It comes down to personal preference. And mine is…. wooden. Wooden boards are generally heavier and less inclined to slip. They are also more attractive and can be used to serve food at the table. Where as plastic boards are lighter, come in various colors and are dishwasher safe. Whichever type you

Cooking With Honey – The Healthy Sweetener

If you want to be able to cook sweets without the negative health effects of refined sugar, honey is an excellent option. Among other reasons, honey is metabolized more slowly by your body, meaning that you are less likely to get a sugar “high” after eating something made with honey. Honey can be challenging to cook with, though, for several reasons. So many people don't cook with it because they don't know how. But once you know how to use honey in your favorite kitchen creations, it's not hard at all to use. The first challenge that honey presents is that it burns more easily that normal sugar. This problem is usually eliminated by doing your cooking or baking at a slightly lower heat. The main hurdle to cooking with honey is that it is a liquid. Replacing sugar with honey will ruin some recipes if you don't make an allowance for the extra liquid that the honey adds. Most muffins, simple quick breads, yeast breads, etc you can make the substitution without any

The best results of exercise are achieved through the use of refined techniques, functional exercises, cardio, the right nutrition, variety, awareness, consistency, and motivation over a period of time. The refined techniques mean correct form to isolate muscles or to target areas of the body.  Efficiency is need to ensure stimulation of the muscles. With weight lift training, which is also known as resistance training, you'll need to eliminate any type of momentum.  It is also important to move the weight about using a full range of motion.  Full range of motion causes the muscle to contract for the right amount of time and help to ensure the right length of the

And for this reason, many people now are looking for ways to stay healthy. But the more important consideration is whether they are ready to make certain changes in their lives or not. The Adjustment to Long-Term Care

When a loved one moves into long-term care, there can be numerous losses, including a cherished home, pets, old friends, autonomy, and privacy. You can help with this adjustment in several ways. One valuable thing to do is to communicate with the staff at the new facility as many aspects of your loved one's life as possible. Talk about his or her childhood, family members, work history, interests and skills, religious background, and how he or she copes with different situations This will allow the staff to see your relative as a whole, interesting person, and will guide them in personalizing the attention they give to him or her. This is even more necessary if your loved one is unable to communicate effectively himself or if he is suffering from any disease that might cause behavioral changes. It will also serve as a way to put your loved one at ease, to build rapport with those around him, and to maximize his potential for enjoying all of the programs the facility offers

Sleeping as You Get Older

As we get older, our sleep needs can change. It is understood that children and adolescents need more sleep than adults, but surprisingly, older adults may also need to get more sleep. It is recommended that seniors get at least seven hours of sleep, but some need up to nine hours per night. Unfortunately, many seniors struggle to get the sleep they need. Sleep disturbances can increase with age. Older adults often find it difficult to fall asleep, and they sleep less deeply. They also tend to wake up more during the night. Older adults also often find that they get sleepier earlier in the evening and if they do not shift their bedtime earlier, they can lose needed sleep time. Why do seniors have these common sleep problems? As you age, your body produces less melatonin, the sleep hormone. You can also become more sensitive to environmental disturbances-temperature, sounds, and light. Finally, seniors have more medical problems, which can lead to unsettled sleep patterns. Poor sleep ca

Do you need long-term disability insurance?

A long illness could derail even the best retirement plan. You may be a diligent saver, one who maxes out your 401(k) and IRA, but you probably haven't considered protecting your ability to earn money. Your earning power is more valuable than your savings or your stock portfolio. Not planning to protect it, even for a couple of years, would seriously alter your plans for the future. One in three employees age 25 to 65 will be out of work for three months or more because of an injury or illness, according to the Society of Actuaries. Accidents are not the main cause. About 90 percent of disability claims are for common illnesses and health conditions, such as back problems and cancer, according to a report by the Consumer Federation of America. Advisors quoted in Fortune recommend looking at your cash flow and your employment income and thinking about how well you would do if you couldn't work. Short-term disability insurance (sick leave) covers earnings for only a fe

What Your Heirs Will Need To Know

You can make life easier and less expensive for your heirs if you provide them with these basic lists, say financial planning experts. * Bank and credit card accounts. List the name of each institution, type of account, the account number, telephone number and password for each. Tell where the account statements are. * If you have an attorney or financial planner, provide the person's name and contact information. * Make a list of recurring bills and loan payments. It's especially important if payments come directly out of a checking account. Tell heirs not to close accounts until arrangements have been handled. * List your life insurance policies and contact information so heirs can collect what they are due and cancel policies that are no longer needed. In this case, ask for premium refunds, which can amount to hundreds of dollars. * List all email addresses you use and account passwords if any. This will help heirs find bills you have and notify acquaintances of yo

Pharmacists play an increasing role in health and nudge people to take their pills

One problem with prescriptions: many bottles just tell the name of the medication and how many pills to take. Busy primary care doctors may not have explained how to take them, or in the stress of the visit, the patient might have forgotten the instructions. Here are two examples: A woman who was prescribed a once-a-week bone-building pill took it whenever it was convenient. Her pharmacist explained that it should be taken in the morning and she shouldn't eat anything or lie down for an hour afterward. A man taking a medication for reflux disease thought he would need surgery because his medication wasn't doing enough. After a pharmacist explained when and how to take it, the man felt much better. Walgreens is gradually remodeling their stores to put pharmacists at open desks so customers can easily discuss their prescriptions with them. The company says many patients are talking to their pharmacists more often than to their primary-care physicians.

Five Tips for Healthy Living

Take a few minutes each day to stop and reflect on your life. You can spend some time practicing gratitude. This helps give you some perspective and improves your ability to handle life's challenges. Remember that you have the power to control your thoughts. Researchers studying weight loss have found that most people will state that they need to lose 50 or more pounds to be "successful" at losing weight. This often sets them up for failure by making this goal seem out of reach. A better strategy is to set a reasonable goal, such as losing 10 pounds. Studies have shown that even a 10 pound weight loss has measurable effect on your blood sugar level and overall well-being. Once you've hit that first goal, simply set another until you've gotten as healthy as you can. To get the best protection from sunscreen, you don't have to buy the highest SPF you can find. Unless you have a skin condition, have had skin cancer, or are very fair, you can use a product wit

Five Steps to Forgiveness

Grudges are easy to hold onto-it is forgiving that can be tough, but the benefits are enormous. Anger and resentment can not only harm you mentally, but studies have shown that there are increases in heart disease, cancer, and other deadly diseases when a person has pent-up anger. Go through these steps to help on your way to forgiving someone in your life. 1.  Try to understand the pain in you. Recognizing how you really feel-your anger, fear, or grief-is important. Know that you are the only one who can change the situation you are in. No one else can. 2.  Don't expect to understand why it happened in the first place. Knowing this probably won't lessen the pain and sometimes even the person who hurt you doesn't know why it occurred. Also, know that forgiving is entirely up to you and cannot always wait until the other person has admitted the wrong-this may never happen. But for your own sake, you should pursue forgiveness as a good for you. 3.  Acknowledge your part. No o

Saving Money on Gas with a Quick Check-Up

Gas prices are rising every day, and it seems that there is little you can do to keep from spending more and more. But there are simple steps you can take each time you stop to fill up your tank that could save you money. It used to be that each time you pulled into a service station for a fill-up, the attendant would open the hood and do a series of checks. In these days of self-service, these mini-check ups are no longer done on a regular basis. You can, however, do these checks yourself. Make sure that you only check under your hood if your engine is off. If you are at a busy station, you can simply pull to the side after fueling your car. While it may seem like these checks can not do much to save you money on gasoline, it will pay off in the long run. An engine that is not running properly or improperly inflated tires will decrease your gas mileage and cost you money over the long run. The following are some of the components you'll want to check each time. Coolant overflow ta

Heat Stroke and the Elderly

According to the U.S. National Institute on Aging, seniors are at greater risk for heat stroke and heat exhaustion. As people age, they are less able to adapt to increasing temperatures. Heat can also exacerbate medical conditions that they may already have. If an older person has heart disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or dementia, they are at increased risk of body overheating, also called hyperthermia.  Trouble walking can also contribute. There is an increased risk due to dehydration, often caused by medications that older people take. In fact, in some older persons, the sweat glands may not work as effectively, leading to overheating. What should you look for to check for heat exhaustion or heat stroke? Symptoms can include a rapid pulse, lack of sweating, dry flushed skin, lightheadedness, confusion, or disorientation. If you find someone you believe is suffering from the effects of the heat, you should immediately move them to a cool place and call 911. U
